Patrick Barmby is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics education at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Previously, he worked at Durham University in the UK. Both his research and his work with pre-service teachers in both countries have focused on issues in primary education. In particular, he has focused on the use of visual representations to support understanding in mathematics, and also attitudes towards mathematics.
