From Shame to Pride: History of Recovering from Judaeo-Christian Homophobia

Pages 141-186 | Published online: 19 May 2009

Abstract

Since the 16th century A.D., the Judaeo-Christian culture has been recovering from its homophobic response to military male rapes by its enemies during its prior 3,000 years. Judaeo-Christian culture's militaries have become strong enough to resist any further enemy threats of male rape. Judaeo-Christian culture gradually gained military, political and economic world dominance and spread cultural homophobia globally. As the culture has become more secure during the last 500 years, its homophobia has slowly subsided. By the late 20th century, the culture had become secure enough to tolerate the emergence of the gay identity movement. Still, Western culture remains homophobic enough to polarize most male bisexuality into straight and gay identities and lifestyles. As cultural recovery from homophobia progresses, bisexuality may gain more acceptance.
