Transforming Instruction into Pedagogy through Curriculum Negotiation

Abstract

How does pedagogy differ from instruction? The paper discusses the differences between instruction and pedagogy in light of curriculum negotiation. Dewey's discussion of the instruction/pedagogy distinction, Eisner's notion of pedagogical adaptation as the artistry of teaching, and Pinar's notion of curriculum and study (instead of curriculum and pedagogy) inform this essay. Pedagogy involves the organic relation between curriculum and teaching, and it entails study-based, socially just, and ethically sound practices resulting from negotiations among the teacher, students, and others.
