Commentary on ‘Interprofessional Ethics: A Developing Field?’—A Response to Banks et al. (2010)

Abstract

In this commentary on a previous Ethics and Social Welfare publication, the authors argue that inclusive and expansive dialogue about interprofessional ethics is more a matter of ‘‘revitalizing’’ traditional professional ethics than developing a new field. The dialogue will be most productive of care improvements if it incorporates the service user, includes both health and social care professions, and occurs across countries.

Madeline Schmitt

Madeline Schmitt, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a nurse-sociologist and Professor Emerita at the University of Rochester School of Nursing. She has been investigating and writing about interprofessional practice and education issues since the 1970s. She is an Editor Emerita of the Journal of Interprofessional Care, was a Co-Chair of the All Altogether, Better Health III international IPE conference in London in 2006, and the major consultant to the first American–Canadian joint conference focused on IPE, Collaborating Across Borders I (CAB I), in 2007. She is a steering committee member of the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative, and part of the Executive Committee for CAB III in 2011

Anne Stewart

Anne Stewart is Professor of Graduate Psychology at James Madison University and a licensed clinical psychologist. She has taught classes in interprofessional ethics, interprofessional early intervention and international courses examining diversity and universality in health and human services. She served as the director of university-based child development center and as chair of the Virginia Interagency Collaboraion Committee for infants and toddlers with disabilities. She works with government and non-governmental agencies to create programs to protect children from the dangers of landmines and unexploded ordnance. She serves on the editorial board for journals in family therapy and play therapy and is the founder and president of the Virginia Association for play Therapy
