A Dance with Parkinson's Disease and University Students

Pages 21-24 | Published online: 26 May 2017

ABSTRACT

Dance for PD® (Parkinson's disease) is a class designed for people living with the diagnosis and challenges of Parkinson's disease. The program was originally founded by the Mark Morris Dance Group, and teachers have been trained in these methods across the world. I led a Dance for Parkinson's Disease program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for several years. This article details the lessons I learned from my students about how to be a classroom and community leader through a focus on student empowerment, the value of shared teaching, and a consistent class structure.
