Abstract

This paper presents an updated version of Hewes' axiomatized, stochastic model of the relationships among messages, mediating variables, and behaviors. Several axioms and theorems of this theory were tested in terms of their predictive accuracy. The theory was also tested against an alternative, and more parsimonious, model. Results of both sets of tests were generally supportative of Hewes' theory with overtime predictions approaching 95% accuracy. Methodological problems and potential extensions of the theory are discussed.
