Shame: Binding Affect, Ego State Contamination, and Relational Repair

Abstract

This article considers the etiology of shame from developmental, environmental, and interpersonal perspectives. Shame is distinguished from the other primary affective states of guilt, anxiety, and depression. Central treatment issues addressed include ego state decontamination, the quality of the therapeutic relationship, and the use of group treatment.
