ABSTRACT
This study involved 81 respondents (38 students and 43 field instructors) at an accredited BASW/MSW program in the eastern section of the United States. Students and field supervisors were asked to define criticism and express their views on its use by field supervisors. A majority of field supervisors and students emphasized the need for an approach to supervision that identifies both competencies and deficiencies, and supported the use of “criticism” if employed appropriately. Strategies regarding the effective and constructive use of criticism are reported.
