Abstract

The cosmetic industry is growing rapidly and there is no doubt that cosmeceutical products contribute enormously to daily care in modern life. Therefore, their active ingredients should have a solid scientific rationale based on human clinical data findings. The formulation should penetrate the stratum corneum and be delivered to the target in adequate conditions. Their efficacy and safety should be established in blind clinical trials conducted by independent researchers. This article gives an overview of the science behind the most commonly used cosmeceuticals and provides background information to answer frequently asked questions on the topic.
