Identification of disease-related biomarkers by proteome analysis of cerebrospinal fluid in Guillain–Barré syndrome

Abstract

Evaluation of: Jin T, Hu LS, Chang M, Wu J, Winblad B, Zhu J: Proteomic identification of potential protein markers in cerebrospinal fluid of GBS patients. Eur. J. Neurol. 14(5), 563–568 (2007). This study aimed to identify disease-related biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) using the proteomic analysis 2D difference in gel electrophoresis. Six different protein levels were found to be changed in CSF of GBS patients as compared with controls. Haptoglobin, ApoA-IV and an unnamed protein (PRO2044) were increased in CSF of GBS patients, while transthyretin, ApoE and fibrinogen were found to be decreased. The significance of these proteins remains to be further evaluated by quantitative assays and by taking into account disease-related variables such as blood–CSF barrier function and subtype of GBS.
