Abstract
Vocational training for general practice is now well established, and within this vocational training, the trainee year is of crucial importance.1 In this year the trainee general practitioner is seen in educational terms to be in an adolescent phase,2 in which developing relationships are important. Indeed, the trainer/trainee relationship may well be considered to be the single most important factor in training;3 the trainer has considerable potential influence on the future general practitioner.4
