Agrarian Transformation? Rice Production in A Javanese VillageFootnote∗∗ Fieldwork was conducted in the village under study from August 1978 to October 1979, with Margarets Schweizer as co-investigator and Agoes Setyadjie as research assistant. The research was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and was conducted under the local sponsorship of the Research Centre for Rural and Regional Development, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, with the approval of LTPI. Sartono Kartodirdjo, as director of this centre, was most helpful at all stages of our work. In addition, Peter Carey, Clifford Geertz, Mubyarto, Stuart Planner, Parsudi Suparlan and the editors also provided useful comments on issues discussed in this article. Sole responsibility for the content of this paper, however, rests with the author. The topics discussed are covered in more detail in my monograph (1983). I would also like to thank Phyllis Rechten for translating the manuscript.
