¹Cathedra is a Latin word for the chair or throne of a bishop. It is the symbol of the bishop’s teaching authority and thus can also be used to refer to a teacher’s authoritative position in a school and classroom, as well as to his/her physical position in front of the students (which, in the old days, often meant standing on a podium).
