An earlier draft of this paper was presented at the 3rd Academic Swiss Caucasus Net (ASCN) Annual Conference on “Political Transformation and Social Change in the South Caucasus: Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan in Perspective”, which took place in Tbilisi, from 21 to 22 June 2013. Parts of this paper were presented at a Midi de la Recherche (Global Studies Institute, University of Geneva) on 27 May 2016.
