The term suggests that a style or phenomenon is expanding, but that it is not expected to be a permanent fixture of social life. “In trend” is the opposite of “out” (: ao), and contrasts with terms such as choei (: dated, uninteresting) and ban-nok (: uncultivated, bumpkin).
