GRAZING OPERATIONS IN THE FLINT HILLS–BLUESTEM PASTURES OF CHASE COUNTY, KANSASFootnote11 Initial fieldwork for this research project was made possible by a University of Kansas grant in 1959–1960, which also covered the services of Carol F. Gibbs. Miss Gibbs processed the great bulk of data gathered on land ownership and farm operators in Chase County, and prepared a whole series of tables, maps, and figures partly based on these data, some of which are included in this report. More recently a Post Doctoral Fellowship granted the senior author by the Social Science Research Council (1963–1964) made possible additional fieldwork and the preparation of this report, as well as another more general paper on the bluestem area as a whole. Deep gratitude is expressed for all financial and personal assistance, the latter including many informants in all parts of the bluestem area in Kansas and Oklahoma and Dr. George F. Jenks, cartographic advisor.
