- Kadaré makes fun of the Sinologists, the sinophiles, in short of the Albanian Chinese ‘experts’, just as he had earlier in Le Grand Hiver made fun of the Russian experts when relations with the Soviet Union were still good. One of these Sinologists, for example, knows by heart in their proper order of importance, the whole list of Chinese Party members at the present moment. He knows that this list is only temporary and will change, and then he'll have to learn by heart the new list and so on. But he is spared the trouble, for relations with China will be broken off and he'll lose his job.

- Kadaré's great novel calls to mind several others which have treated the same subject and are worth reading or re-reading: Arthur Koestler's Darkness at Noon, especially in connection with the trial of the officers and soldiers, drivers, and radio-operators accused of disobeying the order of attacking the Party Headquarters of a small provincial town following Chinese instructions. Their self—and mutual accusations and confessions are only too familiar, both from reality and fiction. Then there are two of Kafka's famous stories from Metamorphosis and Other Stories—‘The Great Wall of China’ and ‘In the Penal Settlement’, especially the latter which deals with the forced self-accusation of the prisoner and victim of any repressive society. See also Michel Serres's ‘Farmer’ which gives a marvellous description of China's land, frozen in eternity, a country which has never entered history, where the density, organisation, and artificiality is absolute, where there is no place for anything else. As Michel Serres says and Kadaré has shown, life, intelligence, goodness probably come out of the free play of imagination and lack of restraint. (Detachment).
