National Championships in Individual Events: A Discussion of the Tournaments Held by the American Forensic Association and the National Forensic Association

  • The AFA Tournament was held at Iowa State University on April 6–8, 1979; the NFA Tournament was held at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on April 26–30, 1979.

  • In items number 1, 4, 6, 7, and 10, the AFA Tournament came first; in items number 2, 3, 5, 8, and 9, the NFA Tournament came first.

  • For ease of reading, the notation “J” refers to judges' mean score and “C” refers to contestants' mean score throughout the discussion.
  • While the exact figures from the NFA Tournament were not available, estimates indicate that both the percentage of hired judges and the average judging load was higher at the NFA Tournament.
  • Although the AFA Tournament rules stipulate that five judges will be used in final rounds if possible, to date this procedure has not been implemented.
