  • It has not hitherto been noticed that there were two issues in 1783 and a third in 1784 (see text below). The second issue was also reprinted in Dublin, in Watson Richard Chemical Essays, to Which is Added Sir Torbern Bergman's Admired Essay on the Usefulness of Chemistry , 3rd ed. Dublin i 1783 1783 (Bergman's Essay occupies pp. 415–480).
  • The Italian translation of 1788 Moström Torbern Bergman. A Bibliography of his Works Stockholm 1957 ii item 280 has only 342 paragraphs, because the translator combined §§160 and 161. Paragraphs after 160 therefore have numbers that are one lower than in the other versions.

Trans., 1772 (pub. 1773), 62, 147–252, but it was probably the separate pre-print, with the same title, published late in 1772. See F. W. Gibbs, Joseph Priestley, London, 1965, p. 61, and R. E. Schofield, A Scientific Autobiography of Joseph Priestley, Cambridge, Mass. and London, 1967, p. 381.
  • Two letters from Bentham to Priestley, probably written in November 1774, are in Sprigge The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham London 1968 ii 404 405 (note 8), vol. i, pp. 208–216. Priestley replied to these on 16 December 1774 (ibid., pp. 225–226).
  • Sprigge , T.L.S. , ed. 1968 . The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham Vol. ii , 265 – 265 . London It is suggested (p. 265 n.) that this is a reply to one of Bentham's letters of November 1774, but it seems to refer to a later one. Since November 1774 Priestley had written to Bentham on 16 December 1774 (ibid., pp. 225–226) and 19 March 1775 (ibid., p. 225 n.).
