  • With ‘Kleenex at the ready’, Stravinsky thought that the War requiem was ‘rather a soft bomb’, using ‘an idiom derived in part from Boulanger-period Stravinsky’ Stravinsky I. Craft R. Themes and episodes New York 1966 14 14 A comparison between Stravinsky and Britten is an excellent example of the contrast between innovative and traditional composers (a contrast that can be made between scientists, too). Stravinsky is still the towering master of 20th-century music, and has been much more influential than Britten on composers and professional musicians. But Britten may be closer to the public heart, and his death be felt more deeply than was Stravinsky's in 1971.
