Among Werner's literary remains at the Bergakademie Freiberg, Freiberg, German Democratic Republic, are eighty-four volumes of manuscripts which have only recently been fully catalogued. Photocopies of many of the manuscripts were made for me before the collection was catalogued, and I have not had the opportunity to collate my copies with the originals since. The notes which I took while I was in Freiberg before the Werner manuscripts were catalogued also have not been collated with the catalogue. The citation ‘Werner Mss’ refers to my copies or my notes; and titles, where given, correspond to those of the Bergakademie Freiberg library. Unfortunately, some of the manuscripts were untitled and undated as well as unnumbered. Therefore, in one or two instances (footnotes 14 and 18 below, specifically), I can give no clearer reference than ‘Werner Mss’.
