  • The transatlantic affinities of sociobiology are worked out admirably if a little inaccurately by Patrick Gray J. Wolfe Linda D. Sociobiology and Creationism: Two Ethnosociologies of American Culture American Anthropologist 1982 84 580 594 in and by Martin Barker in The New Racism: Conservatives and the Ideology of the Tribe (London, 1981), chapters 6–8. Gray and Wolfe conclude that, ‘while sociobiology is nontheistic, evolutionary, and finds its morality in natural selection and creationism is theistic nonevolutionary, and finds its morality in the supernatural, both arrive at the same conclusion as regards American society: the American way of life is founded on eternal values which are best inculcated by the traditional family, and alternative life styles threaten to destroy this way of life’ (p. 591). Barker, like Ruse and Wilson, sees Hume's philosophy of human nature as the root of the matter.

The best exposé is Mary Midgley's Evolution as a Religion: Strange Hopes and Stranger Fears (London, 1985).
