LXVIII.—Notes on the Blennioid fishes.—I. A provisional synopsis of the genera of the family Blenniidæ

Pages 793-812 | Published online: 18 Aug 2009

  • 1912 . Ann. & Mag. Nat. Hist. , x ( 8 ) : 266 – 266 .
  • The following genera have been doubtfully referred to this family, but, as they are not represented in the British Museum collection, I have omitted them here: Pholidichthys Bleeker 1856
  • Rao . 1938 . Rec. Indian Mus. , xi : 380 – 380 . states that Andamia should be classed as a scraper and seems to feed mainly on minute algæ, but microscopic animals which are found in association with the algæ are also taken in during feeding.
  • 1928 . Labroblennius Borodin is very inadequately described but may perhaps belong to this subfamily.
  • Some authors have placed this genus in a distinct subfamily, distinguished by the very long tail and the greatly increased number of fin-rays and vertebræ, but as Regan has pointed out Ann. & Mag. Nat. Hist. 1912 x 8 267 267 it has the head, mouth, teeth, gillopenings, etc. of Dasson and related genera.
  • Schultz . 1941 . Copeia , : 17 – 17 . has recently proposed a new genus, Gloriella, for Cirripectes caninus Herre, differing from Cirripectus in having four canines at the symphyses of the jaws, a restricted gill-opening, and an incomplete lateral line.
