Willem There is no such gap in the model of the Prins of, but it is shown very definitely in a picture of the Africa by Zeeman reproduced in The Illustrated London News of December 19th, 1931. The reproduction gives the date as “about 1668,” but the ship's only voyages were in 1674, 1677, 1680 and 1683, the first being for the Chamber of Rotterdam and the others for that of Amsterdam. Zeeman is usually said to have died in 1672, though on no very good authority. Perhaps he painted the ship about 1673 before her first voyage. From the number of her crew it is probable that the Africa was a 16o-footer. She had 24 broadside ports on the lower deck and apparently 22 on the upper deck and 8 on the half-deck. Her stern was like that of a man-of-war of 1660–5, but lower and broader
