PORTUGUESE ROTEIROS, 1500–1700

Pages 171-186 | Published online: 22 Mar 2013

References

  • The chief credit for organising the exhibition was due to Captain Tancredo de Moraes, Commander Fontoura da Costa and Snr. Frazaõ de Vasconcelos, all of the Escola Naval
  • 1892 . Esmeraldo de Situ Orbis two editions, both published at Lisbon in and 1905 respectively
  • 1798 . Dialogo do Soldado Pratico. Lisboa
  • Letters of King John III of Portugal 254 – 6 . Cf. the documents printed on pp. of where Martim Affonso makes several interesting suggestions about the sea route to India and alterations in the Roteiros.
  • 1843 . First published in 1882, and 1833 respectively
  • Purchas also says that the original was dedicated to the Infante Dom Luis, and that Sir Walter Raleigh had added numerous marginal notes and observations
  • At least I presume these additions were copied from a Dutch source. The chapter in question starts by saying that the Hollanders frequent the island; and as the Portuguese seldom or never went there, it seems probable that the account was taken from the Hollanders. I know of no Portuguese version
  • 1934 . Um Roteirista desconhecido do seculo XVII Cf. my article printed in the Arguivo Historico da Marinha, Lisbon
  • 1934 . Roteiros For further details concerning all the and other books quoted in this article, see the Bibliografia dos Roteiros Portugueses até ao ano de 1700 printed in the Arquivo Historica da Marinha, Lisboa, which also contains an account of Commander Fontoura da Costa's lecture, Este Livro he de rotear…, on which this article is based
  • 1933 . Observations 57 Cf. p. Argonaut Press edition by J. A. Williamson. London
