  • It is worth noting that Midshipman Kay was only 14 and Dr Webster was the ship's surgeon, neither of whom had any obvious reason to deal with Parry over the preparations for the voyage (ex inf. Dr H. Murphy)
  • 2004 . The Admiralty Hydrographic Service 1795–1919 Vice-Admiral Sir Archibald Day briefly mentioned Foster's voyage but little of the role played by Parry (A. Day, (London, 1967), 32, 34). Rear Admiral Steve Ritchie goes into much more detail concerning Parry's scientific achievements and the voyage, rather than the preparations by Parry from an administrative perspective (G.S. Ritchie, The Admiralty chart. British Naval hydrography in the nineteenth century (2nd edn, Edinburgh, 1995), 181–7). Regarding the relationship with Rossel, Day incorrectly names him as ‘Ropel’ while in England in 1801 and made no mention of his later dealings with Parry (Day, Hydrographic Service, 32). Although Ritchie made no mention of Rossel he astutely pointed out how Parry was ‘in correspondence with France, Denmark and Spain’ (Ritchie, Admiralty Chart, 182). The late Ann Parry did not mention either the contribution by Parry to Foster's voyage, or any of the dealings with Rossel, in her biography of her ancestor (A. Parry, Parry of the Arctic (London, 1963). For Beaufort see A. Friendly, Beaufort of the Admiralty. The life of Sir Francis Beaufort 1774–1857 (London, 1977); N.
