  • In fact, this is true for all spectra, except the spectrum just below the clearing point. For this spectrum, a small part of the change in lineshape seems to be due to S stat

  • We have also performed a more sophisticated analysis of the whole set of 7, data in terms of an equation of the form: γ1 (T) = γreg 1 (T) + γ0 1 (T/Tc - 1)−x in which the first term is the purely nematic (regular) term given by Equations (5,6) and the second term is the contribution of the smectic order parameter fluctuations. The problem is that three additional adjustable parameters are now introduced, namely γ0 1, Tc and x, for one single extra data point. The complete fit was made using an iterative method, namely the parameters of the regular part were adjusted as described in the text, then fixed to these values and the three other parameters adjusted taking into account the whole data set. This procedure was repeated for several plausible sets of values of the regular parameters. The result of this analysis is that the conclusions concerning the regular part described in the text are not changed, and that x is probably not larger than 1.5
