Soc. 1977 99 7403 7403 experience a similar discrepancy when they calculate free energies by evaluating the average ⟨exp (βUN )⟩, where UN is the total potential energy. They point out how much high energies can dominate, ⟨exp (βUN )⟩, in spite of the extremely low probability of observing the system in such states. This fact prevents standard M.C. calculations from being accurate in this case
