It is interesting to note that at no time was he required to state either the purpose of his research or his academic qualifications

In New Directions in Archival Research 45 Liverpool We are not wishing to imply that members of the academic community are less trustworthy than other users. However, in some cases the elevated status of academic users has meant that they have aroused less suspicion and been granted greater privileges enabling thefts of material to take place. Amongst other examples, Helen Wood cites the case of 'Anthony Melinkas, a 68-year old professor of an at Columbus, Ohio' who had stolen leaves from a fourteenth-century manuscript from the Vatican Library. The head of the library had 'granted him many privileges, including free run of the library during its closure periods'.
