The use of Cr(VI) reagents and potassium permanganate lead to large quantities of ring cleavage products. Our efforts at using pyridinium chromate, aq. N-bromosuccinamide, dimethylsulfoxide and acetic anhydride, and aluminium isopropoxide also ended in failure. Success was finally achieved with the Swern reagent mentioned.
