  • The equation is where a = number of elements in set to which transference is made, b=number of elements in set from which transference is made, and X and y=cross-links before and after transfer. The solution set for this Diophantine equation appears to be a= 1, b = 9, x/y = 3/4; a = 4, b = 81, x/y = 18/20; a=8, y= 50, x/y=20/21. Thus, in an 85-phoneme system, if we have four elements on one side, the transference there of one element would change the potential cross-linkage from 4 x 81(182) to 5 X 80(202), so that in cases where x and y were in the proportions 18:20 the equation would be satisfied.
