- In any study of the Celtic languages time is the great adversary, for all of them are receding at an alarming rate. A delay of a few years could easily result in the loss of a dialect, not only because of the passing of the older generation at whom the questionnaire was chiefly directed, but because of the extinction of the dialect itself in all strata of the population. Successive statistics published in Wales from decade to decade reveal drastic reduction in the percentage and actual numbers of Welsh speakers. Figure 1 (p. 2) in Thomas’ work—a map showing percentage and total numbers of speakers of Welsh by county—gives a rather disheartening picture. The percentage themselves can actually be misleading in an overly-optimistic way, with four counties hovering around 75 percent, because the overall national figure is approximately 18 percent. The struggle being waged now (valiantly, in some quarters) is to raise the percentage to 20 percent and to hold or even gradually increase that figure.
