Much of the discussion of the logic of caste can be a useful component in an overall theory if it is not simply mistaken for a description of contemporary reality, but too often such theorists implythat if traditional Hindus think culture rules economic lite, it in fact does so — and to accept that it docs then become a matter of “not imposing alien conceptual frameworks”! In one of these articles, published after the Emergency, it is stated that “India's grass-roots impassivity and inert cohesion amidst adminstrative chaos must indeed stem from a deep-rooted belief in fundamental values and the eternal priorities” (J. D. M. Derrett, “Rajadharma”, JAS August, 1976). There is something missing here: reality.
