  • The complex impedance properties consist of the resistivity p and the specific reactance Xc, where the units in both cases are ohm‐cm. In terms of the tissue dielectric constant ?, at frequency f Xc = 1/2π ? ?r f where ?r is a constant. These concepts are fully discussed in References 25 and 26. 39 Our preliminary results (which will be reported in a later paper) are consistent with these previous studies. From 11 subjects the regression of (height)2/WBI (100 kHz) vs TBW (measured by deuterium oxide dilution) yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.79, with a standard deviation of 4.4 liters and a coefficient of variation of 9.3%. For 12 subjects the regression of (height)2/WBI (1 kHz) against the ECFV (measured by thiocynate dilution) yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.70, with a standard deviation of 2.9 liters and a coefficient of variation of 11.8%. The mean TBW was 47.3 liters and the mean ECFV was 24.6 liters.
