• It is generally found that for most material parameters the lowest solution H1 = HSP corresponds to Q2 y real but negative. As Qy also must be real and hence as Q2 y must be positive, one has to look for the next higher solution H2 < H1 for which (3.1) is again satisfied. This is found to yield a positive Q2 y from which Qy is calculated. H2 is taken as the SP threshold. H2 compares well with HSP found from the exact solution; Qy found from the approximate calculation is generally slightly higher than Q determined from the exact method.
