Pages 23-27 | Published online: 15 Apr 2008

End Notes and References

  • For the purpose of this article, feminism is defined as the analysis of women's subordination. There are several schools of feminism including radical, socialist, liberal or reform and post-modern. The writer favours the radical feminist approach
  • Farm women are defined as those women who live on farms and properties. Both James ( 1989 , p.2) and Kelly (1982, p.2) estimate that this could be as many as one and a quarter million women in Australia
  • Many of the studies referred to in this article are American. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, there is a dearth of research on Australian farm women. Secondly, farming families in America, who have been studied extensively, operate in similar economic and social conditions to Australian farm families
