  • This article is a condensation of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Northwestern University in 1943, under the direction of Dean James H. McBurney and Professor Robert Seashore. The dissertation gives the following material which is largely omitted here: many statistical tables, a description of an experiment in training students to evaluate speaking performances, sample copies of the scales used in the study, an explanation of the manner in which the Attitudes Scale was constructed, a summary of the literature bearing upon the topic, and a bibliography.
