  • An example of Tyler's desire to restrain expenses can be seen in his comment regarding a two hundred and fifty dollar payment to Sparks for his map mission. “I can only say that I should regard $250 to Mr. Sparks for the map fully enough. I do not doubt but that it will satisfy him. If otherwise we can see more about it.” See Merk, pp. 65n.51.
  • Baxter believes Ashburton's money was used to supplement Sparks's Contingency Fund payment of $250. He raises the possibility that some of the money may have bribed state officials. Others have suggested that Webster himself received some of the money. See Baxter, p. 343. Merk states that the identity of the person who distributed the British money and who received payments simply cannot be determined. See Merk, p. 71.
