• HANS-PETER WIENDAHL was born on 11 February 1938 in Wickcde/Ruhr, Federal Republic of Germany. Professor Wiendahl graduated after an apprenticeship as a Mechanical Engineer at the State Engineering School in Dortmund. After two years of industrial employment he attended the Polytechnical University of Aachen and finished with the degree of a Diploma Engineer. From 1967 until 1970 he was research assistant at the WZL Laboratory for Machine Tools and Workshop Management (Professor Optiz). In 1970 he graduated as Dr.-Ing. with summa cum laude. From 1972 to 1974 he returned to industry as head of the department 'Planning and Quality' at Escher Wyss GmbH in Ravensburg and was, until 1979, head of the technical department of the paper machinery branch at the same company. In 1979 he was appointed full-time professor and director of the Institut fiir Fabrikanlagen (Institute for Production Systems) at the Univerity of Hannover. Since 1987 he has been Vice President of his University. Professor Wiendahl is referee for various research associations and since 1989 a full member of CIRP

• DlRK PETKRMANN was born 17 March 1961 in Germany. From 1980 to 1983 he studied Industrial Management at the Berufsakademie of Stuttgart while he was employed with Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart. After graduating in 1983, he studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hannover, where he graduated in 1989 as Diploma Engineer with summa cum laude. He is presently research assistant at the Institute for Production Systems at the University of Hannover.

From 1983 to 1988 he studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hannover, where he graduated in 1988 as Diploma Engineer with summa cum laude.
