  • The starting point for this article was provided by two books: Romilly Jenkins, The Dilessi Murders originally published in 1961 (references in this article are to the 1998 reprint, Romilly Jenkins, The Dilessi Murders, London, Prion Books), which coined the term ‘Ethnic Truth’ and applied it to the question of brigandage in 19thcentury Greece, and John Campbell, Honour, Family and Patronage, Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1964, which offers a sound anthropological basis for that concept. I should like to thank Dr. Geoffrey Edwards for making much appreciated comments on an earlier draft of this article.
