Weimar, London Und Paris: The Provincial Cultural Elite Views the Big Wide World

  • Bertuch's name stood for the publication of periodicals such as: Magazin der spanischen und portugiesischen Literatur, Journal des Luxus und der Moden, Pandora oder Kalender des Luxus und der Moden, Ratgeber, Allgemeine geographische Ephemeriden, Gartenmagazin, Nemesis, or Oppositionblatt, and he was of course involved in Wieland's (Neuen) Teutschen Merkur and in the publication of the (Hallische) Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung.

Yet this was due to particular caricatures they had included, which are not the subject of this study. However, some considerable work is being done on this topic at Friedrich-Schiller Universität in Jena as part of a large research project called ‘Ereignis Jena-Weimar um 1800’.

  • The content of the above-mentioned ‘Gesetz’ is actually added in a footnote signed by the editors back in Weimar. This is common practice throughout the journal, and these footnotes can sometimes take on quite substantial dimensions.
  • At another point he refers to a similar pictoral arrangement (horses and coach) saying that the bodies of the horses indicate that they are just about to move.
  • Where the London correspondent gives this kind of information, he does it for a totally different purpose. Thus when Hüttner writes: ‘Astley's Comödienzettel sind gemeiniglich drey Schuh lang und werden auf grellfarbige Papiere, meistens von hohem Orangegelb, gedruckt, und müssen den immer nach London zuströmenden Landleuten in die Augen fallen. Daher ist Asdey's Haus nie ledig’ (L&P, 1/4/1798, p. 328), the effect is to add a touch or two to the characterization of the spectatorship; to illuminate the interaction between the theatre and its audience; and perhaps also to suggest to one or the other reader that this place is worth visiting.

  • As a term this dated back to the early eighteenth century. Around the turn of the centuries it did not seem to have been widely used. In the first instance it might thus have carried resemblances to other, more fashionable, ‘tableaux’. A resemblance to the contemporary fashion of ‘tableau vivant’ might have suggested itself. That could of course only be an associative one, since ‘tableaux vivant’ were speech- and motionless and life was frozen. Publications such as Mercier's Tableaux de Paris did much more prove to be a model for ‘our’ journal.
  • The use of language by the London correspondent in particular is strikingly similar to the descriptions by, say, Franz Hessel or Walter Benjamin, of modern city life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as seen from the perspective of a flaneur.
