  • Milton . Complete Prose vol. III , 184 189 The question of spelling arose first in Milton's Animadversions when he defended the Smectymnuans against the Remonstrant's [allegedly Hall's] statement about their mistaking the name of a place, the Areopagi, for the name of a person. Milton quotes the Remonstrant who wrote, perhaps too sportively in such a grave controversy: The Areopagi? who are those? truly my masters I had thought this had beene the name of the place, not of the men.Milton replies:Mistake not the matter courteous Remonstrant, they were not making Latines: if in dealing with an outlandish name they thought it best not to screw the English mouth to a harsh forreigne termination … Remember how they mangle our Brittish names abroad; what trespasse were it, if wee in requitall should as much neglect theirs? and our learned Chaucer did not stick to doe so, … with many names strangely metamorphis'd from true Orthography, if he had made any account of that in these kind of words. (I, pp. 666-667)To this, Hall's defender in the Modest Confutation replies that 'Chaucer hath mollifyed a termination … [but not] the name of a place into the name of a man' (I, p. 667, n. 12)
