- This paper was written for Steven Lukes's seminar at the European University Institute, Florence; and made up half of a debate with Peter Rinderle, whose own paper forcefully put the opposing view in favour of the validity of Kant's whole approach to politics. I am especially grateful to him and also very grateful to Ian Carter, Nicholas Harrison, Steven Lukes and Mozaffar Qizilbash, all of whom gave helpful comments and observations.
