Notes

  • This was a workshop organised by the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, following the instituting of several significant archiving initiatives in the Hitesranjan Sanyal Memorial Archives. The archives now include a substantial visual archive and an archive on the history of advertising in Bengal (for further information see ). The 2002 event coincided with the exhibition “Visual Worlds of Modern Bengal: an Introduction to the Pictorial and Photographic Materials in the Documentation Archive of the CSSSC” – cf Guha‐Thakurta (2002). http://www.cssscal.org (http://www.cssscal.org)
  • I am referring to the heroic work of several independent advocacy groups in India who have, at their own cost and initiative, put public interest documentation in the public domain, often utilising the Right to Information Acts that some state governments have passed. For an extraordinary example, see the work done by the Communalism Combat collective (http://www.indiarightsonline.com http://www.sabrang.com (http://www.sabrang.com)
  • 5. In addition to 70 databases, including the famous Jstor and Project Muse, the British Social Science Information Gateway, for example, offers Archives Hub, the national gateway providing free access to descriptions of archives of UK universities and colleges. A more famous example is the Athens Access Management System which provides single sign‐on access to numerous web‐based services. Athens was initially deployed in the higher education sector in 1996 and has become the de facto standard for secure access management to web‐based services for the UK education and health sectors. See the work of the British Joint Information Systems Committee in this regard ( http://www.jisc.ac.uk (http://www.jisc.ac.uk)
  • 6. This is a joint programme initiated in 2005 in Bangalore. For further information, see http://www.cscsban.org/html/IndianOcean.htm. http://www.cscsarchive.org/courses/indoc/ (http://www.cscsarchive.org/courses/indoc/)
