  • Chinese military theorists use the philosophical concept “negation of negation” to describe the evolution of war. In their view, the two world wars marked the negation of previous limited wars and the Gulf War marked the negation of world wars. Thus, war has completed one developmental cycle—from limited war to world war, and from world war back to limited war.
  • Some have translated “jubu zhanzheng” as “partial war” or “local war.” But I avoid using these terms because the former is not an established military term and the latter may lead to misleading perceptions, even though when translated into Chinese, “local war” is usually rendered “jubu zhanzheng.” The term limited war” is translated into Chinese as “youxian zhanzheng.” However this term covers almost the same range of military activities in the conflict spectrum as Chinese “jubu zhunzheng.”
