As noted elsewhere for α-aminoalkanephosphonic acids6,39 we have found that the addition of an excess of alkali causes a substantial downfield change in 31P chemical shift. E.g. the values observed for 6 (X = H, 4-Me2CH) are, respectively, 10.27 ppm and 10.20 ppm in D2O but change to 18.84 ppm and 18.97 ppm if an excess of NaOD is present. Intermediate values are observed with lesser amounts of alkali present
