- An estimate that it would take a ton of crude aponin to treat a red tide outbreak, while intriguing, has a common fallacy of failing to anticipate progress: purification typically enhances specific activity by 105 to 106‐fold. In our experience, 105 enhancement of specific activity occurred,39so that rather than 1 ton of Aponin, 0.02 lb would have been needed, granted the same assumptions, not all of which were valid.
