  • “More recent research has recognized a much broader application and role for GDSSs . Jan. 1990 . in Information & Management, vol. , 18 ( n° 1 ) : 15 – 28 . •, which now are viewed as supported searching for alternatives, communication, deliberation, planning, problem solving, negotiation, consensus building, and vision sharing, as well as decision making for group members not necessarily in the same place or at the same time.” in Douglas VOGEL and Jay NUNAMAKER “Group Decision Support System impact: Multi- Methodological Exploration,”
  • The most basic goal of a GDSS is to support and structure the exchange of ideas, opinions, and preferences within a group. In addition, the GDSS must account for myriad variables that may affect group meetings and the organization in which they occur” in Brent GALLUPE and James MCKEEN, “Enhancing Computer-mediated Communication: An Experimental Investigation into the Use of a Group Decision Support System for Face-to- Face Versus Remote Meetings”
  • “In December 1986, the new field of “Computer Supported Cooperative Working” was opened by a conference at Austin in Texas . 1989 . in 79 – 114 . • The core concept has been summarized as “groupware”-computer software designed for use by groups rather than individuals.” Mike ROBINSON”Double Level Languages & cooperative working”. Proceedings of the int. Conference on “Support, Society and Culture: Mutual Uses of Cybernetics and Science” OOC, University of Amsterdam
  • At least there is a different marketing approach: previously GDSS primarily had success in “High-tech” equipped computer-rooms at Universities in the U.S.A. where animators guided the sessions. CSCW on the other hand seems to be aiming at the larger existing network software market. There is some (although small) European effort not to miss the boat this time. COST, a European organization to promote cooperation on science and technology, has recently established a research action in order to enhance the collaboration of research groups working on Cooperation Technology.

In The computerized group decision making system has potential to become an important part of an organization, but the research done thus for in this area is unfocused, lacks rigor and a theoretical base, and disregards the communication component of the technology except on the most pragmatic, fundamental level In the future, researchers should study GDSS as a communication system in order to generate the best design for decision making strategies

In particular human communication needs when using distributed, time-deferred communication systems are investigated. The authors outline the material, concepts and results produced as an outcome of the Group's work. (…) They give the background to group communication, communication patterns, the needs and concepts for technical support and the impact of such support.”
