The First Scottish International Aviation Meeting

Pages 62-71 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

REFERENCES

  • John Damian was Alchemist Royal to James IV of Scotland. An Italian by birth, he was a contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci.
  • It was not until 1907 that a European machine exceeded the Wright Brothers' initial achievements, but dramatic developments soon followed.
  • When talking about world records it should be remembered that records toppled like ten pins at the time. It was not until 1907 that any European powered controlled flight beat the Wright Brothers' flights of 1903, but after that year, following a wider adoption of the Wright Brothers' wing-warping feature, creating greater flight stability, aviation development gathered pace. Drexel's record did not last out the year and Radley's speed record was overtaken within a few weeks.
