Though not the focus of this article, Third Wave Evangelicalism—just as Neo-Pentecostalism and other forms of Evangelicalism (see Emerson and Smith 2000 and O'Neill 2010)—tends to “individualize” problems to the extent that social sources, institutions and forces that might be implicated in misfortune and injustice are ignored. In this sense, Third Wave theology offers what might be described as a “supernatural” hermeneutics of suspicion that contests the materialist hermeneutics of suspicion proposed by Marxism. In the place of social inequalities and laissez faire neoliberal markets, the Third Wave imaginary conjures demons—summoned by the sins of individuals—to explain social problems.
