Mapping the spatial limbos of spiritual warfare: haunted houses, defiled land and the horrors of history

Pages 166-185 | Published online: 27 Apr 2015

notes and references

  • One might note here that the sins related to foreclosure are interpreted by the writers as being entirely those of the individual owners, not of a corporation that may have loaned to unqualified applicants and charged exceedingly high interest rates. Though not the focus of this article, Third Wave Evangelicalism—just as Neo-Pentecostalism and other forms of Evangelicalism (see Emerson and Smith 2000 and O'Neill 2010)—tends to “individualize” problems to the extent that social sources, institutions and forces that might be implicated in misfortune and injustice are ignored. In this sense, Third Wave theology offers what might be described as a “supernatural” hermeneutics of suspicion that contests the materialist hermeneutics of suspicion proposed by Marxism. In the place of social inequalities and laissez faire neoliberal markets, the Third Wave imaginary conjures demons—summoned by the sins of individuals—to explain social problems.
